Security and economic benefits
Cutting
the use of petrol and diesel has major security and
economic benefits.
Europe will be increasingly dependent on oil supplies
from unstable regions, particularly the Middle East. By
adopting plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles,
Europe's need for oil can be reduced dramatically. Such
a change would indirectly contribute to our defence.
Economically, it is likely that the price of oil will
rise with increased demand from developing countries.
Reducing the use of petrol and diesel will insulate the
economy from such cost increases and could prove to be a
source of significant competitive advantage.
Assuming that other developed countries and developing
nations adopted plug-in vehicles, the geo political
consequences are very significant. Foreign policy
effort, and for countries such as the US, military
resources are geared to dependence on oil. If demand
for oil fell dramatically, not only would the price fall
but the significance of oil producing areas would
diminish accordingly.
